My girls had been waiting anxiously for the movie “Strange Magic” to come out on DVD. Unfortunately we just never had the opportunity to see it in the theater and as soon as they new it would be released (May 19, 2015) they were all crazy to get the movie! When it arrived I could barely talk them into waiting for family movie night even thought it was just a couple of days away, and I gave it. Just imagine my surprise when we turned it on and the kids groaned “Mom not another musical!” But girls you wanted this movie so bad – give it a few minutes okay? That was three viewings ago, so I guess that gives you some idea of what they thought of the movie after a “few minutes.”
“Strange Magic” is a mixed up story based on Shakespeare’s “A Mid Summer Night’s Dream.” Beautiful vocals, songs through the ages are all mixed and mashed up to tell the story of an unlikely alliance, the strength of true love and how to survive a breakup with a not so Prince Charming.
Mom, dad and older sister found ourselves singing along with the songs, and soon the girls were too – but more importantly they were up and dancing around as they enjoyed the music. I didn’t get the “musical” comment – especially since they loved High School Musical (all of them) and Teen Beach Movie (look for more of that to come in Teen Beach 2).
The vocals were amazing! I had no idea Alan Cummings (The Good Wife) could sing and his character was incredibly loveable. The younger sister looking for love, our fairy princess who had more on her mind that wings and trolls, goblins and creepy crawly creatures oh my!
The colors were breathtaking and the kids kept repeating one scene near the end over and over again. I’ll let you decide which one was your favorite.
