The great leash debate: Parenting and children’s leashes

As a parent for over 20 years, I know that there has always been some debate about whether or not to use a leash system for your children, but it seems that now the debate is even more heated as the women wars take on the topic of mommy matters and make judgments about what are the best ways to parent. Twenty some years ago I found the value of a leash on a child and I never forgot it as I had more children. What can we say about leashes?

They are kids, not dogs.  Yes, even 20 plus years ago I heard this phrase. I even was one of the mom’s saying it. But a trip to Orlando with my three year old son and my parents quickly changed my mind as we visited crowded spots like Sea World and Disney. 1. There is nothing wrong with using a backpack leash. If someone tried to make a comment about it to me, I’d just let them know using it makes me a safe parent. Period.

Initially, before becoming a parent, I would say “I will NEVER put a leash on my child. EVER.” Ha. Then came reality. My firstborn is strong-willed and independent. We’re talking no stroller, no holding your hand.. I figured if I had to put a leash on my child to keep her from being kidnapped, so be it. Let people stare. That’s my theory in alot of my parenting issues with an independent tot- let people stare. It’s worth it. I can handle crying, screaming, meltdowns in public places, but I CANNOT handle losing my child.

I just can’t get used to seeing leashes on kids. I prefer my Safety Slaps instead. They just seem more humane.
