The day has arrived when my little girl isn’t so little anymore. With her birthday she has hit the “tween” years. The one thing she desired for her birthday was to redecorate her room. She desired something more mature, more of her personality and more comfortable for when her friends come over. After watching home and garden shows, consulting YouTube and brainstorming with her oldest sister the idea of her new room was born and it was time to get to work. But home much can you really get done when you are on a budget want to do a room makeover? You might be surprised, at how much you can accomplish. I know I was. So come redecorate with us with one fabulously fun tween girl bedroom makeover.

The Before Bedroom
Teen Time Bedroom Makeover
Rule no. 1 for creating one teen-trific bedroom
Clean out anything that your son or daughter has outgrown from books to stuffed animals and especially toys, games, and clothing that they no longer play with or use. Some things like a medal or trophy you may want to create a special space for but anything they are no longer using or haven’t used or worn in months it’s time clear it. out.
After clearing the room out, we then moved furniture around. Now there is more light and space as well as providing her with a reading spot that is all her own. Her bed and nightstand moved. Her dresser moved into the dressing room. We now had space for a chair that was just taking up space in the office and never used (even though it was practically brand new) and a few other items to create her dream reading spot.
Rule no. 2 for creating one teen-trific bedroom
Know your teen or tween. What do they enjoy? What inspires them? Where do they see themselves in the future and what do they enjoy doing. My daughter loves the written word, and always has one or four books she is reading. She likes making up her own stories and writing down ideas. She loves the stars and space, art as well as science and engineering. She isn’t a big frilly girl, but she does love sparkle. By determining what they like now, where they want to go in the future and what really inspires them you can work around those ideas to create your concept.
We decided to add some sparkle with twinkle lights. Repainting the room would have been nice, but instead, we used accessories to bring out the purple in the room instead of trying to find the time and money for painting the room. Fluffy pillow accessories, a new curtain for the window, and a throw for the bed and now the room is more purple than blue.
We added stick-on quotes on the walls in her bedroom as well as in the dressing room. Now she has inspiration wherever she looks on the wall. Her favorite Monet replica of “Water Lilly’s” is hanging on the wall with a DIY Chalkboard for her to write her own personal thoughts, quotes, and inspiration or even just reminders.
Rule no. 3 for creating one teen-trific bedroom
Look at what you have to work with and then to decorate around those items. My daughter already has a beautiful bedroom set and bedding. She had everything her room needed, but not really what she wanted or what expressed her personality. To make it a surprise, we took pictures of the room and then started moving furniture around, virtually using the pictures to design a better use of space. A $2.50 soft, fuzzy, fleece throw from Walmart and accent pillows brought our colors together as well as adding a little sparkle and whimsy to the room’s decor. I do need to run back to the At Home Store. I thought there were two curtains in that package.
Rule no. 4 for creating one teen-trific bedroom
Next when redecorating on a budget, look for some amazing sales. We had the concept of creating a dressing room with this odd sized room which was almost like an office. This way she would have more space in her bedroom and the opportunity to store all the growing girl accessories like purses, shoes, jewelry, and clothing. Here’s a look at her closet “BEFORE.”
Modular closets hosted an amazing sale online during the holidays which provided us with the perfect way of turning an oddly shaped office or side room into an amazing dressing room for a teen girl. It added lots of storage with hangers and shelves and then space underneath for shoes. Now her small corner closet can handle dresses, her linens, extra blankets and pillows for when friends come to visit and her dressing room offers space for clothing to be stored. And here’s a look at her closet, which is now a dressing room, AFTER. She has the twinkle lights for decoration and then when dressing has a ceiling light in the room, her dresser, her modular closet and plenty of space to dress in private.
Rule no. 5 for creating one teen-trific bedroom
Create a basic theme and concept but be flexible and spend some time walking around the stores. We were in the At Home Store for 3+ hours. There were trips to Walmart, Target and Bed Bath and Beyond. Spending additional time shopping was a big help not only with staying on budget but also with getting new ideas which really rounded out our overall concept.
The look on her face when she walked into her room with her older sisters’ hand over her eyes was priceless! I was too busy enjoying it to remember to take a picture. She walked into her room to a chorus of “SURPRISE!” Her hands were over her mouth which was dropped open in shock and her eyes were filled with happy tears. Big hugs all around to the whole family who worked together to make this dream room a reality.
