Starting off each morning with a nutritious breakfast is the best way to ensure a more productive day. Children, in particular, benefit greatly from a good breakfast and studies show that children are more attentive in school and perform better when the day begins with a nutritious meal. Schools often serve breakfast and this early morning meal is the focus of celebration all this week at schools across the United States. The occasion?- National School Breakfast Week, a time to pay greater attention to breakfast, nutrition, and the role of the public and private school system in making sure that kids receive the early morning fuel they need.
Breakfast in the Schools
So what, exactly, is National School Breakfast Week? To summarize it in as few words as possible, it’s a week to celebrate school breakfast programs and their impact on student nutrition and performance. The week is often marked by seminars, special events, and other activities that focus on school breakfasts and how to make them better and more readily available to more children.
The theme of National School Breakfast Week 2015 is “Make the Grade with School Breakfast.” The idea is that a good meal is the best way for future leaders to start their day. With a nutritious breakfast, children are more likely to concentrate, are less distracted, and are more likely to succeed academically. School administrators, parents, and community members are encouraged to get involved and do what they can to make breakfast food more readily available to all.
National School Breakfast Week is all about education and awareness. School administrators, parents, and other concerned citizens are encouraged to visit the following web sites for more information on NSBW:
USDA– This is the governmental branch that administers the school lunch and breakfast programs
School Nutrition Association– This national, non- profit organization is dedicated to student nutrition and its web site is rich with resources and ideas.
Also, be sure to check with your local schools and/or school district, as many of them have special events planned throughout the week. A good breakfast will help students make the grade so get educated and do what you can to improve school breakfast participation and nutrition in your school.
