My parents are coming to visit next month, so I wanted to try out a new recipe on the family before I served it to them. My mom almost always makes sausage gravy when she is visiting me. This started when I was very young, standing on a chair in the kitchen with my mother, and grandmother, and making a breakfast of scrambled or fried eggs as well as biscuits and sausage gravy. After all, for this southern family, one family breakfast must include sausage gravy and biscuits! For my parents’ visit I wanted to show her I still knew how to make it, but maybe give it a little bit of a contemporary twist. I was going to try a Texas Style Sausage Gravy and Biscuit Bake. As a bake, it is a new twist on a family favorite, plus I can keep it warm in the oven while we try to get all seven of us to the breakfast table.
Jimmy Dean® Fully Cooked at HEB
When we first moved to Texas my husband, who had been here for about six months said, “You have to grocery shop at HEB. I think you will love it!” I did, and then I got to save those three little words he loves to hear, “You were right!” HEB is a go-to store for us. It’s right around the corner and always has everything on my list. I also appreciate the in-store tastings and the shared recipes both in store and online. Other favorites about the store include offerings of organic and international foods as well as the brands we know and love. Another big plus about shopping there is the in-store coupons which help me with pairings – either as an idea for a meal or to help me save money on what I was already planning on making.

Telling him about the idea I had, we headed to HEB after dinner and went straight to the refrigerated aisle breakfast meats section to look for Jimmy Dean® Sausage. After all this guaranteed that he would have a good breakfast this weekend. Why pick this specific brand? It’s a brand that my grandmother and mother selected when they cooked breakfast. But it is even easier now that there is Jimmy Dean® Fully Cooked, with a bunch of different varieties like Jimmy Dean® Fully Cooked Original SAUSAGE PATTIES, Jimmy Dean® Fully Cooked TURKEY PATTIES and Jimmy Dean® Fully Cooked TURKEY MAPLE LINKS to choose from.
Why choose the Jimmy Dean® Fully Cooked? Not only is it a brand my family has used for a long time, but also the fully cooked option has the same great flavors and seasonings of other Jimmy Dean® products but without the extra time and effort. The patties are already formed and cooked on my skillet in about 6 minutes or in seconds in the microwave! Anyone in my family can do that! Maybe if they see how easy it is to cook them they will cook breakfast for me more often. A mom can hope, right? Especially with Mother’s Day right around the corner. Maybe they will be inspired.
Texas Style Sausage Gravy and Biscuit Bake and Bowl
With Jimmy Dean® Sausages taking just minutes in the skillet the oven does most of the work with this recipe which is easy enough for anyone to make.
- 12 Large Size Biscuits (Grand Size)
- Jimmy Dean® Sausage Patties (We used Turkey as one of us is currently counting points and calories)
- 1/2 cup flour
- 2-3 pinches black pepper (to your taste)
- 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 cup milk (depends on how quickly your gravy cooks)
- Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
- Cook Jimmy Dean® Sausage Patties in skillet for approximately 6-7 minutes turning halfway through cooking time.
- Crumble patties.
- Cut biscuits into quarter size pieces.
- Place half the biscuits in a nonstick baking pan (a large size pie pan will work.) I used a casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray.
- Add flour and black pepper to skillet and stir.
- This part gets fun so don’t take your eye off the skillet. With skillet on medium high pour milk slowly while whisking it into the flour and sausage mixture to create your gravy. Whisk fast so that it all mixes together. If it starts to get to “clumpy” add more milk.
- Pour sausage gravy over the biscuits.
- Top with remaining biscuits.
- Bake on middle rack of oven for approximately 15-20 minutes (oven times vary).
“But mom we can’t just have this for breakfast!” Don’t worry, during those last five minutes or so of baking I made scrambled eggs topped with shredded cheddar cheese. For the husband, it was the perfect breakfast bowl starting with the bake, topping it with scrambled eggs and a little more cheese. The girls were not thrilled at having their food mixed together but enjoyed every bite. My oldest was practically moaning while she ate it, she thought it was so good. The middle daughter said, “No thank you,” ‘til the mhhhm started and then it was all over. You heard nothing at the table except for mmmmm and “It’s so good make it again, Mom!”

One of the joys of cooking any meal is that it brings back memories of my childhood and learning how to cook, especially with my grandmother who is no longer with us. This weekend as I tried this recipe idea out my daughter joined me. Not only does it teach her how to cook, but it is my hope that she will have memories like mine of spending time together in the kitchen.
