Ford Motor Company is the quintessential American brand. Founded by Henry Ford, this automotive giant has been at the forefront of American manufacturing ingenuity with a history that spans from the early days of the twentieth century to the present day. Detroit, Michigan was ground zero for Ford’s innovation and the place where it all began is also a tourist attraction. It’s the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant, a relatively small facility where Henry Ford guided his business in its early days.
History on Display
Ford Piquette Avenue Plant occupies a three- story building located just minutes northwest of downtown Detroit. From the outside, the brick building takes on an historic but somewhat insignificant appearance. It doesn’t look like anything special and I would bet that many people pass right by the building not realizing what is contained within.
But the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant is much more than meets the eye and visitors will realize this the moment they step inside. This is the actual building where Henry Ford turned his vision into reality and visitors get to see the office where Henry Ford worked and the rooms where he and his associates met to discuss engineering, marketing, and other aspects of founding and running an automotive business. The history of the Model T and other cars is on open display and guests will enjoy learning about the different vehicles popular in the early days of the company.
Where most visitors will spend the bulk of their time at the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant is on the second floor, looking at the actual vehicles popular during Ford Motor’s first years in business. Money Saving Parent visited the plant as part of a Ford sponsored event and this section of the building was easily the most popular. Automotive buffs in particular will love walking from car to car, examining the design and details, reading about each car’s history, and taking pictures.
Foundation for the Future
Ford Piquette Avenue Plant is an important part of American manufacturing and the history contained within the walls of this building is unmistakable. Walking through the building, you feel like you are reliving the past as you stand in the same rooms where Henry Ford once stood and think about where Ford Motor started and how far it has come.
Automotive innovation is an important example of American ingenuity and Ford Motor is one of the companies leading the way in technological advancement and change for the future. Ford Motor is known for its classic and top- selling vehicles like the Mustang and F150 and the company continues to outshine its competition. It’s a company with a vision that hasn’t stopped evolving and it all started at the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant in Detroit, Michigan. Plan a visit the next time you’re in the motor city and relive this interesting part of America’s manufacturing past.
