Today is “Random Acts of Kindness Day.” I can’t think of a better time of the year to have this unofficial holiday, especially after the horror of earlier this week as a 19-year-old shot and killed teachers and schoolmates in Florida. There are all sorts of discussions going on about mental health, bullying, health care, and gun control. But one thing that I’m trying to teach my children is that with all that is bad there is also a whole lot of good. We have been discussing what we can do differently, especially when we encounter those that are seemingly different from us. Our family movie night and weekend project is all about kindness and differences as we view a screener of “Same Kind of Different As Me.”

Same Kind of Different as Me
Same Kind of Different as Me is based on The New York Times best-selling book, and recipient of the Dove Foundation seal of approval for ages 12+, SAME KIND OF DIFFERENT AS ME follows successful art dealer Ron Hall (Greg Kinnear, Heaven Is For Real) and his wife Debbie (Renée Zellweger, Bridget Jones’s Diary), who seemingly have the perfect life. But when their faith and family are tested, an unlikely bond with a homeless drifter (Djimon Hounsou, Blood Diamond) leads them on a remarkable journey that forges an everlasting friendship. “Loaded with surprising twists and turns” (Jim Ferguson, KGUN9 ABC Tucson), SAME KIND OF DIFFERENT AS ME shows how a simple act of kindness can change everything. I don’t like to spoil the viewing experience for you so I’ll just let you watch it – and then let me know what you thought about the movie!
Here’s one spoiler, it touches on some tough topics but encourages faith and hope, and family even if they aren’t the family you are born with. It is a real-life story of how just a little bit of kindness can go a long way towards making life better for someone – and for yourself too. My best friends have already asked to borrow it from me they were so excited to see we got the opportunity to preview it!
The SAME KIND OF DIFFERENT AS ME Blu-ray includes over an hour of behind-the-scenes bonus content, including deleted and extended scenes, featurettes, and commentary by director Michael Carney, writer Ron Hall and writer Alexander Foard. The DVD includes the feature film only.

The Kindness Rocks Project
The Kindness Rocks Project began with founder Megan Murphy. Missing your parents she would talk to them as she walked on the beach in her near her Cape Cod home. She felt like she was connected to them as she would encounter heart shaped rocks or beautiful pieces of sea glass – that in some way they were there and encouraging her. Then after a service project she and her daughter did in India she returned with a need to kindness with others in unexpected ways, “The simple acts — a smile, holding the door for me, pointing me in the right direction, made such a huge difference to me.” And so the concept for The Kindness Rocks Project was born. Armed with a Sharpie on her next trip along the beach she started leaving unexpected messages. The project has grown from random rocks left anonymously to inspirational rock gardens, to parks and playgrounds, across the U.S. and around the world from Canada to Australia.
Murphy says that the idea behind the project is simple “One rock, one person,” she explains. “If a message hits a person at the right time, or they join and they do it in their community and they drop a message that hits somebody when they need it, it’s like a huge connection. It’s what our world needs right now.” I have to agree.
