Luby’s has become a new family favorite with kids and adults. There’s a delicious menu with homestyle options as well as the make your own salad options and so much more. If that wasn’t enough there are now take and go items available like their home made pecan pie, and it’s in little servings perfect for — well not sharing!

Luby’s is a cafeteria style dining experience, that I was honestly unaware of until I moved to Texas. I drove by one almost every day but never really stopped in. After a tour of the newest Luby’s/Fuddruckers combo I knew that it was time to take the whole family and let them see what they thought of the restaurant. Sure, I liked it but the ultimate test is will it pass the kids taste test?
When you walk in to Luby’s there are literally dozens of food items to choose from. I appreciate a good salad, especially when it is one that I didn’t have to do the washing and chopping of. The kids were thrilled to select their own fruits instead of salad. Up next, entrees with several to choose from. My youngest went with chicken tenders with the sides of fruit and corn. Another daughter selected the steak, and no matter how hard I tried she wouldn’t take the kid size portion. She added her fruit and some other sides. I admit I went for the old fashioned country fried steak and mashed potatoes to go with my salad because when I go out to eat I either want seafood or things that I normally don’t take the time to make at home. Look at this serving!
Another favorite of mine is the enchiladas, as well as the grilled tilapia and grilled shrimp (I ate off my moms plate because after all I HAD to try it!. The enchiladas are excellent with a side of the jalepeno cornbread. Actually everything was good. Did we leave some on our plate? Well yes, yes we did – but not because we didn’t like it – but because something like this strawberry shortcake was waiting for us to share. Yes, yes we did share it! The cake and whipped cream are freshly made and I’ve never tasted whipped cream that was so good! Mr. Money Saving Parent enjoyed the chocolate cake while grandma and grandpa enjoyed the pecan pie.
I think one of the things I really love about Luby’s is that everyone can make their own choices. With the kids making choices they select things that honestly surprised me. I didn’t think they would eat them but with it on the cafeteria line it was so much easier to make selections by looking at them instead of looking at the menu and guessing or imagining what they may look like. It was easy to ask questions about ingredients from the knowledgeable line staff too. Everything was served up hot and fresh and, it definitely doesn’t get dried out like many other restaurants do with their food.
Delicious, homestyle cooking just like grandma used to make – but without all the work. It was so relaxing to have the foods we love and the family we love with us while we enjoyed it. My parents are looking forward to another trip there!
