Do you ever have a craving for someone else to do cooking like grandma used to? Fresh vegetables, a heaping salad, homemade cornbread and steamed, grilled or yes (gasp) even fried foods? I admit that I do and I’ve found a place where I can take the whole family and everyone will be happy, Luby’s restaurants.
Disclosure: I was offered the opportunity to participate in a tasting and behind the scenes kitchen tour at a Houston area Luby’s which was one of the few locations available that also offers a Fuddruckers. All opinions expressed are my own and my family’s. Do you have a restaurant, attraction or product you would like reviewed? Contact me and let’s talk!
I hadn’t ever been to a Luby’s Restaurant prior to my kitchen tour. I had this idea of what the restaurant was like, but I was only halfway right and I’m so glad I took the time to learn more. Since I was excited to learn more, I was thinking you may be too! Luby’s is in several different states and has been around for 65 years. Finding that out I think that means that they really do have something going on. You can find Luby’s Restaurants near you.
During the tour and tasting we were able to find out things like:
- Did you know it takes 2 days to make their signature macaroni and cheese?
- That there is a farmer’s market in the kitchen filled with fresh fruits and vegetables – we watched at they sliced and diced and prepped for the day right there.
- That Luby’s is a great value? The average meal is $10.99 and that last night for Mother’s Day was for a Blackened Chicken and Grilled Shrimp dinner.
- Plenty of freshly steamed vegetables and drink selections.
- At combined locations you can visit both restaurants and get whatever you like and sit wherever you like – so if the kids want to make their own burgers you can do that too.
- A combination of seating options, from tables, to booths and even large parties.
- Catering is also available as well as private functions, meetings and event community service like sports teams.
Set up cafeteria style, you simply walk up and decide what it is that you want. Behind the scenes cooks have recipes to follow to freshly replace items as they disappear from the service line. A helpful server gets your tray safely to the table and makes sure you have everything you need with stops to refill drinks or hand you extra napkins as needed.
I was so impressed with my tour and tasting that I returned on Mother’s Day with the whole family. I wanted them to see what I saw and let me know their thoughts!

The kids absolutely LOVED being able to make their own choices starting first with some fruit salad, then their entree, and then their sides. The macaroni and cheese was a favorite with both kids and my middle daughter thought that the freshly made strawberry shortcake was the best she’s ever eaten. I admit that freshly made whipped cream on it was amazing!
Mr. Money Saving Parent picked up steamed vegetables, Chicken Fried Steak (which I was able to see freshly made during my kitchen tour), salad and chocolate cake. Everything was perfectly prepared and the portions are HUGE. It’s an amazing value to spend approximately $10.99 and get Blackened Chicken and Grilled Shrimp for dinner for Mother’s Day!
Money Saving Tip: Locations may vary but there is an all you can eat breakfast buffet on Sat. and Sun. for just $5.49. You spend more than that at fast food breakfast!
Luby’s was truly a family dining experience. My youngest talked about the Periodic table, the middle daughter talked about her upcoming talent show tryouts. It was food like grandma used to make, and that I make when I have time to. Comfort food got a whole new look for us, with grilled and steamed items as well as plenty of fruits and salads making it easy to include healthy choices and get the kids to try something new. We are already planning another trip back with Grandma and Grandpa when they are visiting. We think they will love it too!
