We recently were giving the opportunity to review a (what was to us) a new brand of tequila, Pura Vida. Little did we know it was an award winning tequila with a long history of taste, flavor and acclaim.
We started our review with a sample of the Silver Tequila and made the Pura Vida Fizz, the perfect celebration drink for any occasion. An early Saturday collage bowl game seemed like the perfect time to try the Pancho Villa, a signature drink made with Pura Vida Reposado Tequila and the Pura Vida Bloody Maria Mix. The recipe is posted below so you can just print it and take it to the store!
Look at that picture! There are so many fresh and amazing flavors at work in the Pancho Villa. The Bloody Mary Maria Mix is made in small batches from a family owned secret recipe.
We shared a bit about the history of Pura Vida tequila in our previous post and I’ve found out some really interesting facts about it since then. We knew that it was award winning so we want to share with you some of what the industry has to say – after all they are the critics right?
Awards and Recognition for Pura Vida
We feel that Pura Vida Reposado really offers something special and unique to the tequila category. It represents elegance and class all while delivering a stunning flavor profile with elegant smoothness and beautiful package design” – Victoria Vann, Executive Editor for BIN
Beverage Industry News (BIN) has served the U.S. Beverage Industry for eighty plus years and is one of the most widely read and respected beverage trade publications in the country.
The Spirits of Mexico Competition held annually in San Diego is something like the Oscars and Olympics rolled into one and they described Pura Vida as “Best in Show.”
Topping the list of elite brands were two new names in 100% agave tequila. Pura Vida Tequila earned gold and tied for “Best of Class” honors for its blanco, gold medals for Pura Vida Reposado and Pura Vida Extra Añejo and a silver for their añejo. “
Now this is a blind taste test from the experts in the business!
So knowing this you would think that it would carry with it the high price of some other well known tequila brands, but it doesn’t. That’s music to our money saving parenting hearts!
Okay so it’s award winning, reasonably priced and has a long history behind it. But what about taste?
Mr. Money Saving Parent is our Bloody Maria official taster. After all it’s a drink he really enjoys AND he was a bartender in a former life. Now, he just pours a pint over at GreatBeerNow, but I digress. Let’s see what he has to say!
I though that the Pura Vida Bloody Maria was a flavorful alternative to the typical Bloody Mary. I could taste the flavors of mixed vegetables such as tomato, carrots, beets, and spinach with the taste of agave and it was deeper in flavor than a Bloody Mary, which is traditionally made using vodka. A Pura Vida Bloody Maria has a moderately spicy character with a noticeable pepper component and a less pronounced but evident saltiness. It’s a good beverage to drink as an everyday cocktail and it would match up nicely with breakfast foods such as scrambled eggs or omelets. In this case it was perfect with Lisa’s last minute bowl game day brunch spread!
