Are you a “Rizzoli and Isles” fan? I am and so I was thrilled when I recently had the opportunity to talk to Angie Harmon (Jane Rizzoli of “Rizzoli and Isle’s”) about kids, cooking and a really interesting project with Uncle Ben’s Rice.
Uncle Ben’s recently hosted a “Better Meals with Uncle Ben’s Beginners Cooking Contest” is a program which offered parents and children the opportunity to submit a home video showing the whole family cooking together, which featured a rice dish. Votes were held and one grand prize winner would be chosen to receive $20,000 cash, an appearance on “The Rachael Ray Show” and a $50,000 cafeteria makeover for the child’s school! Submitted and the winning videos can be viewed at www.BensBeginnersContest.com, where official contest rules, kid-friendly recipes and helpful hints can also be found.
I really wanted to know what some of Angie’s pantry and kitchen “must have’s” are. I was surprised that here’s aren’t much different from mine!
Here’s an excerpt from my interview . . .
I asked some of my readers what they would like to ask you about being a mom, working, and trying to cook at home with the children. They want to know what are some essentials for you in your kitchen?
Angie Harmon: “Uncle Ben’s Rice, of course. There are so many different versions of it, and I can work dinner around it without wasting time wondering ‘What am I going to make?’ Peanut butter is great for snacks and sandwiches, and even for a sauce for chicken kabobs or chicken satay. Honey, black beans, lentils, and cucumbers.”
“What are some of your favorite dishes to cook together as a family?
Angie Harmon: ” The Teriyaki Salmon with Jasmine Rice and Roasted Broccoli we made for the contest is a favorite with my family. One of my children has a sweet tooth so it’s always a winner. Also we have a stewed tomato and okra dish (see video) that we change it up using different spices to get different flavors, and then serve it over brown rice.”
If you would like to try this recipe here’s the video recipe to help you prepare it!
