Laissez les bons temps rouler !
As if getting ready to embark upon one of our dream cruise vacations wasn’t enough excitement, we were actually leaving from the port in New Orleans. Just to be safe, we would need to stay overnight in New Orleans, (yes, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it) so we were thrilled to discover the opportunity to stay at the fabulous Royal Sonesta New Orleans.
Disclosure: A media rate was provided for this visit, however, all expenses were paid by myself. All opinions expressed are 100% my own and my family’s.
Just imagine arriving at the Royal Sonesta on Bourbon Street. The children’s eyes were big as they looked out the window at all the foot traffic and historic buildings. Pulling into the lower level parking garage the helpful valet made sure all our things made their way upstairs to magically appear at the check in desk at the lobby and then upstairs to our room. It was wonderful to be treated so courteously after quite a long drive.
Finding our room on the R Club level, I was torn between wanting to stretch out on the beds and pretend to be living in a time gone by, the children wanted to explore and of course Mr. Money Saving Parent wanted to visit the R Club Lounge which offers delicious drinks, food and beverages during a “happy hour” both morning and night. We made it just in time to view the sunset over the city. What a beautiful night to enjoy the quiet of the city. Well, that is until we made our way downstairs to the Irvin Mayfield Jazz Playhouse.
This was our favorite part of the day. It’s beautiful inside and the jazz band was not only accomplished but fun, warm and engaging. I was surprised to see many families in there, as well as couples young and old. Desserts and drinks after dinner, plus the music was the perfect ending to our day. They played something special for the girls after they left a tip, and even gave them a round of applause after seeing that the girls just couldn’t contain themselves and had to get up and dance. That of course led the way for some adults to get out there too. They waved good bye to the girls and thanked them for coming when we left during a break, after all we had an early day tomorrow.
But no day in New Orleans would be complete without a walk up and down Bourbon Street. The girls had some shopping to do and what better way to accomplish that than to walk down a few steps and immediately join the excitement, music and chaos that is on Bourbon Street. Some kind college aged girls gave them some beads to wear and they ate their pizza so fast dad wondered if he needed to go back and get another one. Mom took a little more time with her frozen (monster sized) daiquiri.

Just in time to settle in, we head back to our room and once more it is like being transported back in time. The curtains on the beds, the colors of green and gold, all provided an air of history and elegance. Of course not too far back, we needed a few minutes of the Disney channel to get everyone settled down.
The beds were beautifully covered and along with the pillows were very comfortable. It was a good night’s sleep and we all woke the next day rested and ready for our adventure, after a delicious breakfast in the R Club Lounge.
