Teaching your child or class about weather should be something you do every day. It can be something as easy as asking if it is rainy, sunny, cloudy, snowy, cold, or hot outside. You may incorporate a weather wheel or weather board, adding visual images to your weather discussion.
But weather may also be used as a theme, teaching, introducing and reinforcing basic skills such as colors, shapes, sizes, and textures. The following are some fun and interesting Art Activities to do during your Weather themed lesson plan week.
Sunshine Puppets Weather Themed Art Activity
Supplies needed: paper plates (the cheap paper kind), yellow and orange construction paper, craft sticks, yellow, red, and orange paint, paintbrushes, markers and glue.
Instructions: You may want to do this project in a two day session. First paint the paper plates with the yellow, red and orange paint. Encourage older children to swirl the paints creating a mixture of the colors and a 2 dimensional effect. Next, glue yellow and orange construction paper cut into the shape of triangles to the flat side of the paper plate. Add a craft stick with glue. If you want, after they are dry, children can also decorate them with faces.
This project reinforces color recognition, shape recognition, fine motor skills and creativity. You could even incorporate counting, by counting the number of triangles as they are glued onto the plate.
