In our household the most exciting thing about Halloween isn’t the decorations, or the parties, or the trick or treating. What is the most exciting thing for all my children is the fun of dressing up and becoming someone or something else for a whole evening. Now, to be honest, dressing up is nothing new in our household of girls, but dressing up in these amazing costumes from head to toe and getting all sorts of comments and compliments , as well as bag full of candy, well to my kids it doesn’t get much better than this (with the possible exception of Christmas). But creating a costume can be a lot of hard work, especially when you have girls that change their minds quicker than they change into pajamas. This year we decided to take some of the work out of costume creation and have some fun while doing it by using the Kmart Kreator. This of course leaves a lot more time for mommy to do some shopping for decorations, treats and party ideas of her own!

So here is how the Kmart Kreator works. You simply visit the Kmart Halloween website and make your selections from over 10 categories. My middle daughter was interested in “sassy” while my youngest was entranced with the vampire category, courtesy of a special sneak peek screening of “Hotel Transylvania.”
Next you upload a photo (optional), so you can get a glimpse at how you would look in costume and select some accessories. To be honest, although they have used the Kreator six times now, and say they have made their final spooktacular costume selection, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them continue to use it all the way up until Halloween. Who knows, one of the ideas they submit may even be one of the weekly prize winners.
Now it’s my turn to start our Halloween celebrations. Each holiday one decoration is hand made. Our favorite has been chair/bar stool slipcovers and we love to pull them out each year. It’s simply to make. We picked up white pillow sheet covers at the dollar store and come home to look through our craft shelves to find felt, googly eyes, yarn and foam. It’s time to get even more creative and each one of the seats now proudly bears one family members very own Halloween sweet seat.

For me, nothing says Halloween like the fall season does. Since we moved to warmer weather, we found out that fall doesn’t happen quite the way we are used to. So we have to get a little creative, with both indoor and outdoor items. Last year the girls “planted” different colored leaves in our flower beds so we would actually have all the colors of fall. This year I’m going to enjoy these adorable pumpkin holders all throughout the Halloween and Thanksgiving season (did you know that if you put pumpkins on concrete they rot faster?) At around $10 they were more than reasonable and both the younger girls say that it’s “them” at the front door. They are trying to talk me into letting them personalize them with hairbows- but I’m not sure if that’s going to happen. Next, I’ve picked up some scented oil for the simmering dish and some candles in the scents of apple cinnamon, pumpkin and spice and everything nice.

With the outside and inside of the house decorated, we start our party planning with some ghoulishly good recipes to feed the whole crowd, games, and crafts. After all what would a Halloween party be without a Graveyard Cake, Bloody Fingers, Jack O Lantern Pizzas, Slime Time Punch and Snot on a Stick. These recipes are always crowd pleasers and teasers, especially with kids as they laugh about what each of the recipes turn out to really be.
After all our preparations, it ‘twas the night before Halloween and all through the house the scents, slipcovers and fall leaves were all very nice. The pumpkins were standing all on their own, with hopes of trick or treaters to visit their home. The children were dressed in their creative costumes, while visions of Skittles danced in their heads.
Happy Halloween!
