If fast, friendly, casual dining is what your family looks for then they don’t need to look any further than Black Walnut Cafe. I’ve visited before, but normally without the family (yes on the rarest of occasions I actually do something without them) so this time I was really excited to see if they would like this restaurant as much as I do.
Disclosure: This was a part of the Go Houston campaign organized by New Creative Media. I received media rates for our dining experience. All other expenses were my own. All opinions expressed are 100% my own and my family’s.
When you first walk into a Black Walnut Cafe you will find different seating arrangements from this room which reminded me of my dining room at home, to private rooms, chairs and couches, and in some locations like this one on Memorial Drive in Houston, bar and patio seating are also available.
You grab the menu and walk up to the counter to make your selections. You receive a buzzer and when your food is ready you head back up to the counter to pick it up. I needed a little help because WOW there was a lot of food! Soda and tea are self service too, however there is also wine and beer available. There are lots of dining choices including salads and pot roast with mashed potatoes and gravy like Grandma used to make to a Pasta with Basil and Shrimp. My daughter ordered the Chicken Parmesan and said it was the best she had ever had, adding “sorry mom but it is!” when the server checked on us.
Mr. Money Saving Parent enjoyed mixed vegetables and a salad. Those potatoes, yeah the real thing with skins still on them and just a little bit of seasoning. They were delicious! (Come on, I can’t write about it if I don’t taste it!). I admit that my pasta dish with shrimp which is a house specialty only had two bites left when I was done with it. I couldn’t help myself.
In addition to an eclectic drink and dining menu there’s also plenty of choices for dessert.
One daughter couldn’t wait to try the award winning gelato and it did not disappoint on this hot summer day. the other talked dad into sharing a slice of chocolate heaven. . . I mean cake and if you don’t believe me that it was heaven be sure to watch the video. I think the look on her face says it all. It’s a good thing that we are getting plenty of exercise walking and swimming in the Royal Sonesta pool! We are going to need it after this dinner.
I think what I like best about Black Walnut Cafe was that it was so casual, warm and friendly. While some of the dishes could be considered more “upscale” it didn’t matter that we were wearing shorts and had been running around all day. It was so relaxing and the food was delicious and reasonably priced. Everyone got exactly what they wanted and mom got the night off from cooking with no dressing up required. It can’t get better than that!
