It’s been said that “everything is bigger and better in Texas.” I can’t disagree and there is no place like home with it comes to amazing tastes and flavors to enjoy with friends and family. Start with local award winning artisanal products then even more great Texas taste from the local farmers markets.
Tasting Texas at the Farmer’s Market
I fell in love with Farmer’s Markets many years ago when I was visiting San Francisco. It was a novelty to me and not something I had experienced in Ohio. After our move to Houston, the weekend activities quickly started to include visits to the Farmer’s Market where I could select fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, eggs, cheese as well as huge selection of fun other items from sauces and jams to home decor and natural insect repellent.
There are so many local foods and beverages we have been able to incorporate in our cooking. There is something satisfying to me about knowing where my food comes from and that I’m supporting local business and farmers. It’s also so much fun when you are talking about food at a party with friends and family and can point out where your food came from. Ozarka Brand Natural Spring Water is a bottled water brand I’ve enjoyed for a long time, at home, work and always in my cooler for football and soccer games. They are one of my favorite brands AND they are made right here in Texas! The Ozarka Water comes from 3 Texas springs and has a uniquely Texan fresh taste. Who better to introduce to me even more great Texas taste?
I’m going to highlight a few of my favorites I’ve been recently introduced to.
Great Taste of Texas The Jelly Queens
When I head to the farmers market I admit I have an idea of things I’m looking for. This time round since I was being introduced to Snow’s BBQ Sauce, Cookwell and Company Queso, The Jelly Queens Black Garlic Rosemary Sauce and Kings Spice Steak Seasonings and it is always good to grill in Houston I was looking for some quality, ground beef, steaks, and ribs to start my meals.
I used the recommended recipe dredging my steaks in equal parts organic corn starch and seasoning spices then grilled. Oh my goodness, they were better than steaks I’ve paid so much more for in fancy restaurants. The whole family fell on this steak dinner like they hadn’t eaten in days. The Black Garlic Rosemary Sauce was a perfect compliment. Fresh corn on the cob, homemade coleslaw and loaded baked potatoes rounded out the meal – and our bellies. All of these items you can get at your local farmer’s market.
The Jelly Queens is an award-winning, Dallas and Austin-based artisan food company that makes gourmet jams, jellies, spices, sauces and more. Each product is handmade in small batches using organic and, whenever possible, locally grown Texas ingredients. The Jelly Queens was born out of a love for sustainable food, delicious flavors and words of encouragement.
Great Taste of Texas with Snow’s BBQ
Texas Monthly magazine named Snow’s BBQ as the best in Texas! Since that time, the entire staff at Snow’s BBQ Sauce has been doing everything possible to keep up with the demand and most important, maintain the quality. With complex Texas flavor, Snow’s Original BBQ Sauce is excellent on any cut of beef, chicken, or pork. It’s just as good as a dipping sauce as it is a marinade or brush-on sauce during the last minutes of grilling. We’ve tried all those ways from BBQ Ribs to using it as a marinade on Burgers, Brats and Sausage.
Add a side of potato salad (yes same potatoes picked at at Farmer’s Market) and some freshly steamed broccoli and dinner was served. We love our BBQ here in Texas and the versatility of this one makes it THE sauce to have in the fridge or pantry.
Spicy Taste of Texas with Cookwell & Company Queso
I don’t know if you heard but we have had a lot of rainy days here in Houston and I admit my plans did not go as planned. I would have loved to use my grill grill – but I also like to avoid flooding, mosquitoes, standing water and a all the other fun we have been enjoying. But even using my George Foreman Grill I got great tastes and the great grilling lines.
This Queso con Salsa Escabeche is built around a flavorful blend of cheddar and blue cheeses combined with fire-roasted tomatoes, onions, diced jalapeños, and fresh-squeezed lime juice to create simply the best and authentic queso you can buy. Cookwell and Company is located in the heart of Austin, Texas. These guys wear boots to work and boast three grills and a smoker at their office. This is an office I could get used to going to every day!
We used the Cookwell & Company Queso con Salsa Escabeche to spice up Tuesday Taco Night. I wish I could say that the chips were the Paqui brand chips sent with my package but alas … those didn’t last an hour in my house. The
vultures children practically tore the bag apart trying to take it away from each other after I let them have “just one chip.” I should have known they couldn’t stop at just one.
Paqui offers “better-for-you” tortilla chips and tortillas. Paqui is an Aztec word that means “to be happy.” Paqui sells great tasting tortillas and tortilla chips that are crafted with unbleached, untreated flour, or by stone grinding corn and adding mouth-watering flavors using high-quality ingredients, such as fire-roasted jalapenos, fresh cilantro leaves, buttermilk, pumpkin and other spices and flavors. The only way this family was going to be happy was if there were more bags.
Taste of Texas Yellow Bird Jalapeno Sauce
Mac and cheese is a favorite with our family. I decided to spice things up with the Yellow Bird Jalapeno Sauce. Make your favorite mac and cheese. Add a little extra milk and shredded cheddar cheese. Spread in pan, top with Panko crumbs and sprinkle with the Jalapeno Sauce. Bake in oven 325 for about 6 minutes. We served with steamed green beans, beef sausage and since there was a little left the Snow’s BBQ sauce for dipping. There’s not any left now!
