Safety is always a priority for parents, especially those of us who have had teen drivers! But another thing to consider – car crashes are also very costly! Money Saving Parent has your back on this one with a free event that could prevent deadly and expensive crashes with your young drivers. Registration just takes a minute.
Ford Driving Skills for Life is a free hands-on training program for newly permitted and licensed drivers and it is coming to Houston on April 22 and 23 at NRG Stadium as part of its 14th national tour. The great part of this program is that it is free – but what parents and teen drivers will take away from this is invaluable. Ford DSFL provides so much in a morning or afternoon session, including a lot of hands-on driving with professional drivers.
This is a fun and free event, but what it teaches is lifesaving! Some sobering statistics: in Houston and across the country, vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among teens. The Texas Highway Safety Office says in 2016 there were 118 teen driver fatalities and 5,898 teen driver injuries resulting from 83,278 total crashes involving teen drivers. A Governors Highway Safety Association report in October shows that teen drivers are 1.6 times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than adults 35-40.
What does Ford Driving Skills for Life offer beyond driver’s education training? So much! The program focuses on the issues and obstacles drivers face that cause crashes including vehicle handling, hazard recognition, speed and space management, and distractions (texting!). It will also discuss the dangers of impaired driving and offer participants the use of Ford’s drugged and drunk driving simulator suits.
Again, it’s free, but you must register your teen drivers – and it’s filling up fast! The afternoon session on Saturday, April 22 is full, but there is still space in the morning session. On Sunday, April 23, there are still several openings in morning and afternoon. It’s easy to sign up – just go to this link.
Here is a map. The Ford Driving Skills for Life area is just to the west of Kirby, across from NRG Stadium. The entrance is just off Lantern Point Drive.
