Growing up I remember watching The Olympic Games growing up. My favorite summer games were swimming, volleyball, and gymnastics. I remember seeing Mary Lou Retton and Shawn Johnson compete. It seemed like anything could be accomplished as you watch Olympic athletes perform and as they accept their medals. I remember watching Dominique Dawes with my oldest daughter become the first African American to win an individual Olympic medal in women’s gymnastics. Now many years later I’m watching the USA gymnastics team including Gabrielle Douglass “Gabby” at the Olympic Games competing and teaching my children how participating in these sports can help you achieve so much more in life.

Watching The Olympic Games
Watching The Olympic Games has been a long standing tradition in my family. First as I was growing up and then as my older children were growing up and now with my younger children. During the Olympic Winter Games Ice Skating was “must see tv.” In the past we have even gone to a theater like Alamo Drafthouse as press to watch the opening ceremonies on the big screen. My girls were hoping to do so again this year, but with moving our arrangements including pizza delivery and bean bag chairs in the family room floor. We spent time as a family talking about the different countries, Team USA, Micheal Phelps carrying the flag and enjoyed the lighting of the torch while discussing its significance.
Use the NBC Olympics App
While Mr. MoneySavingParent seems to enjoy all the games, but most particularly swimming, the the girls in the house gather together for the gymnastics. This year gymnastics have become so important to my family to watch I’ve even downloaded the NBC Olympics App on my cell phone! We can stay up to date on results and if not at home we can even watch the competitions LIVE!
Talk about how sports help achieve other dreams
Like many other young girls out there my daughters love gymnastics. They have been practicing and competing since a very young age. They enjoy the ability to compete with other, while having their own individual accomplishments. It’s a sport they chose to do from a very young age and they are still pursuing it. While they may never make it to the Olympic Games, they have learned that gymnastics can help them learn other important life lessons as well as pursue other sports they have an interest in like soccer and cheerleading.
Athletes like those competing this summer in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games are role models for many children out there. Gabby Douglas has recently spoke openly about how hard it is to balance being a “celebrity” with being an athlete. I think there’s more to that balance than even she may be talking about as she has also talked about her respect for her parents, being humble and working hard. Her example teaches children to be humble, to continue to set goals and to continue to achieve those goals. But one of my favorite pieces of advice that she has offered is . . .
You just have to be yourself and go full with confidence and be courageous. ~Gabby Douglas
Whether competing in a sport, an academic achievement or other goal this is good advice to follow and a great way to encourage other girls to follow their dreams.
Partner with Proud Partners of Team USA
But the athletes competing and the families back home watching are not the only ones encouraging others to achieve their dreams. Let’s Power Their Dreams both of the athletes competing and the young people watching, through partnerships like those with P&G and The Olympic Games. Special P&G products are now available at Walmart. When they are purchased they help to power those dreams. While our family uses many of the participating products, I think the one that may get the most use in a family of four girls is the Venus® Swirl Razor.
The Venus® Swirl Razor:
- Helps capture what other razors may miss.
- Designed with FLEXIBALL™ and five individually adjusting Contour™ blades to glide over curves for flawless skin, long-lasting smoothness, and virtually no missed hairs.
- Has a water-activated MoistureGlide™ serum for incredible glide and a sleek handle with enhanced grip.
The Venus Swirl is one of our favorites. Just create a bubble bath and soften the hair on your legs. One of my favorite things about this razor is that no matter where it is being used the head moves to handle curves on your legs and underarms. I also like the handle. It just seems to fit better into my hand than other razor – and definitely better than grabbing one of the hubbies when I forgot to pick one up at the store. Also think about it – FIVE BLADES! That’s great coverage catching every little hair.
Other products available at Walmart which are proud partners include: Tide® PODS® Original Scent Laundry Detergent, Bounty® Select-A-Size®, 12 Super Rolls, Gillette® Fusion® ProShield® Razor with FlexBall™ Technology, Pampers® Swaddlers Diapers, Head & Shoulders® Classic Clean Shampoo, Aussie® 3 Minute Miracle Smooth Treatment, Always® Infinity Pads and Tampax Pearl Regular Tampons.
