San Antonio, Texas is a city rich with history and charm. Visitors often flock to the Alamo, the San Antonio Missions National Historic Park, and other landmarks that have left their mark on the history of the local area and the United States. But one other main attraction has more in common with recreation and nightlife than with historical significance. That attraction is the River Walk, one of San Antonio’s best and most visited attractions.
A Walk on the Waterfront
Located one story below street level, the San Antonio River Walk is easily accessible from downtown. The River Walk is a paved walkway that follows the along the edge of the San Antonio River as it flows through downtown. The river isn’t very wide in this section and the water is shallow- only a few feet deep, making it reasonably safe. Entrances can be found throughout downtown San Antonio. Tourists need only look for the signs saying “River Walk” with an arrow pointing down. This lets you know that an outdoor stairway is present where you can take the steps down to the water and walk along the paved path.
I Love the Nightlife
The River Walk means many things to many people but at or near the top of any list has to be nightlife. Stroll along the River Walk and you will pass by such noted establishments as Hard Rock Café, Landry’s Seafood, Dick’s Last Resort, Texas de Brazil, and other well- known chain restaurants, independent restaurants, fine dining, taverns, shops, and more. If you don’t like one place, don’t worry- the next one is literally steps away. Many visitors walk the River Walk sampling small amounts of food and drink from several places, as each has its own personality and its own unique things to offer.
Money Saving Parent has visited the River Walk multiple times and we often look for new places to try, but inevitably end up back at some of our old favorites. The kids love Joe’s Crab Shack and Hard Rock Café is always acceptable to the entire family. Entertainment abounds as well and it’s common to find live music at the different establishments, live performers at different locations, and groups of singers at the River Walk’s own amphitheater.
Beauty is All Around
The River Walk is located in the downtown of a large American city but don’t think for a second that this is nothing more than an extension of the concrete jungle. The River Walk is noted for its natural beauty and tourists will love the beautiful flowers, subtropical plants, and other natural beauty that has helped define the River Walk and has added so greatly to its appeal. Everywhere you look, you will see natural plants and the city of San Antonio and others have done an excellent job keeping the River Walk looking so nice and so appealing to the eyes. People are sometimes surprised when they visit for the first time and discover so much natural vegetation. They often come here thinking they will find something similar to the entertainment district in their own hometown. Yes, there are plenty of restaurants, shops, taverns, and performers, but the River Walk is also a great place for its natural beauty. My girls often point out how pretty everything is and they like looking at the different plants and flowers and posing for pictures.
