Do you have any specific places on your family vacation bucket list? We have several and when we heard about an airline sale to Hawaii just recently, we took full advantage and booked our trip to one of the world’s great wonders, Hawaii’s Big Island. Our choice for lodging was Aston Kona by the Sea, located ocean front on the Big Island’s west coast.
Aston Kona by the Sea
One of the chief advantages of a stay at Aston Kona by the Sea is the ocean front accommodations and direct ocean view. This, in fact, is what sold us on this resort. If we were going to Hawaii, we reasoned, it made sense to go all- out and get a room with a great view of the vast Pacific Ocean. And that is exactly what we got- a westward view of the Pacific visible in full from our room’s large balcony.
Aston Kona by the Sea is a condo- style resort, a true home away from home with a full kitchen, living space, separate bedrooms, and washer/dryer. If you like, you can shop for groceries and spend your entire vacation at the resort, since it has everything you need for a quiet, self- sufficient stay. The rooms are decorated in a tropical Hawaiian theme, helping place guests in a Hawaiian frame of mind, ready to relax and put their troubles behind. They have movies available in the guest area as well as board games and other simple amenities that encourage family togetherness. This resort emphasizes simplicity and it delivers on most counts.
Peace and Quiet
Of all the things that could be said about Aston Kona by the Sea, I think the best description is that the resort is very quiet. This is not one of those fancy, overloaded with amenities, set your alarm so you don’t miss the next wine tasting type of resort. My wife and the kids noticed right away that the resort was low key. I wasn’t sure if the kids would like such a tranquil setting, but they did and almost immediately, they wanted to head to the swimming pool. Once we walked down to the pool area, we found that we had the place all to ourselves. There was no live music, no poolside activities, and no feeling of pressure. “This is cool- the entire pool is ours”!, the kids exclaimed. They appreciated what they had and my wife and I liked the resort’s approach to the vacation experience. Guests are encouraged to do as they please and enjoy the natural surroundings in a place where the loudest sound is that of the waves crashing against the shore.
Aston Kona by the Sea has its own beach area complete with lounge chairs and open views. Because the resort faces west, guests are treated to the amazing sunsets that color the skies each evening. Lots of people flock to the outdoors with camera in hand when the sun starts to dip below the horizon, but even then, the mood is low key and the people are quiet and friendly. This contrasts sharply with other resorts we have stayed, many of which are defined by non- stop music, live entertainment, and constant pressure to take part in activities.
Aloha From the Big Island
Aston Kona by the Sea is different from other resorts. We enjoy the occasional high maintenance resort with endless amenities and activities, but there is something to be said for a resort that emphasizes quiet relaxation over raucous action. It’s almost like going on a meditation retreat where everyone seems content to leave the daily grind behind and get in touch with the mind and soul.
Aston Kona by the Sea is a nice place of lodging overall, but it isn’t a perfect resort. The furniture and in room accessories are showing signs of wear and we did notice some areas inside the room and on the resort grounds that could use a little TLC. Was this enough to ruin our stay? Absolutely not, because these issues were minor overall and had no bearing on our ability to enjoy what the resort offers.
Family vacations are important. They reinvigorate the body, provide a time for togetherness, and serve as an excellent learning experience for children. Hawaii is a tropical paradise and the Big Island is a natural wonder in every sense. It’s a place we can cross off of our family bucket list and we are happy we chose to stay at Aston Kona by the Sea. It’s a nice resort with a good deal of comfort and great views of the ocean and sunset. But more than anything, Aston Kona by the Sea is a place for quiet and a great choice when you want to get away from it all, catch your breath, and enjoy nothing more than the sounds of the sea.
