Burgers are one of America’s favorite foods. Living in a city like Houston, we at Money Saving Parent are fortunate, for we have some of the best burger joints in the nation and are consistently ranked among the very best American cities to find a delicious all- beef patty with assorted toppings. A burger restaurant we have visited multiple times and still rank among our family favorites is Grub Burger Bar, located in Houston’s City Centre.

Step Right Up
Grub Burger Bar is a sit- down restaurant, but it’s not a full service restaurant. Rather, you enter and stand in a line where you will be asked to place your order for food and drink. Once the order is ready, you walk to the counter and carry everything back to the table. The wait staff will take care of you from the moment you find a place to sit and will bring you drink refills and desserts, but the initial ordering and the pickup is self- service.
Standing in line and deciding what to order can take time. Most people will go for one of the burgers and our family is no different. Among the four of us, there is usually going to be at least two burgers on the final selection list. If you need more time to make up your mind, not a problem- just stand off to the side and ponder while others move forward. I have found that it’s usually not that difficult because there is always something on the menu that grabs my attention. More often than not, my burger of choice comes down to the toppings, with my final selection matching the burger with the accompaniments that fit my taste at that given moment.
Toppings Make the Difference
When we visit a restaurant like Grub Burger Bar, we all tend to go our separate ways and order different items. This strategy works perfectly at Grub Burger Bar because it means more food options for sampling. And with so many different specialty burgers and often unusual toppings, you will want to sample as many options as possible. I’m partial to the Lockhart Legend, topped with smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, Dr. Pepper (yes, that Dr. Pepper!) BBQ sauce, onion rings, and dill pickles. I also like the OMG Burger, which is topped with Texas chili, cheddar cheese, Grub Burger’s own skinny fries, chopped onions, and mustard. Mrs. Money Saving Parent usually orders something different, which is perfect for sharing.
Insider secret: The “R” in Grub Burger Bar is for “real food” and the “B” is for beef and brisket. That’sthe secret to the tender beef burgers! They are lean ground beef blended with brisket.
More adventurous types will likely go for one of the other burgers topped with items like peanut butter, tabasco mayo, and even pineapple. Whatever tickles your fancy, you can be assured that the burger will be prepared to your liking with just the right seasoning and level of “wellness” you prefer. I can recall the last time I visited asking for medium well and even describing the amount of pinkness I desired. Sure enough, Grub Burger Bar gave me exactly what I wanted.
Not in the Mood for Beef?
If you do not want beef, don’t worry- Grub Burger Bar has other assorted sandwich options. Among them are chicken sandwiches, turkey, and even some seafood choices. The kiddos can select from four different options on the kid’s menu, which is where our kids usually make their choices. My youngest liked her chicken tenders and fries and ranked them among the best she has ever tried. She is like other elementary school- age kids in that she is often finicky and fussy about what she will eat, but she took to the chicken tenders and fries right away.
Shake it Up
A burger or other sandwich with a side item and drink might be enough for most diners, but at Grub Burger Bar, there is one other item on the menu almost certain to call your name. I’m talking about the shakes and there are some very interesting choices among them, including booze- enhanced options for the adults in your party. Yes, they have the usual standbys like vanilla, chocolate, and mint chocolate chip shakes, but I suggest skipping these and going for the weird stuff, like the Kitchen Sink shake. Made for the more experimental among us, the Kitchen Sink contains unorthodox ingredients for a shake, including pretzels, peanut butter, butterscotch and caramel sauces, chocolate chips, coffee grounds, and potato chips! If it sounds like everything but the kitchen sink, well, you would be right and this is precisely how the shake got its name.
If you’re not too sure about some of these shakes, Grub Burger Bar will often let you sample them first. This is a good idea for the young ones above all, since most of them might not like the idea of potato chips and coffee grounds in a shake. Our kids played it safe and stuck with more traditional flavors, but adults might want to give the Kitchen Sink or another of the more unusual options a try, just for the experience.
Insider tip: They walk around with samples in the evening, here we tried the chocolate and the vanilla though they came around again with other flavors. Give it a try then make your decision!
With its assorted burgers, sandwiches, sides, drinks, and shakes, Grub Burger Bar is a nice place for a family lunch or dinner excursion. We have visited multiple times and still plan to visit again when the urge for a delicious burger or shake beckons. It’s located right in Houston’s popular City Centre and with so many things to offer and fair prices, it makes a great choice for a reasonably quick family meal that everyone will enjoy.
