This is our fifth year attending the Houston Auto Show. They look a whole lot different now and our reasons for attending have changed some since then. Maybe not changed as much as grown. Before we would go to the Houston Auto Show for the entertainment value. It was fun. Now we go for that an a whole lot more!

8 Excellent Reasons for Attending the Houston Auto Show
Our history in the car industry
My husband and I grew up in Dayton, Ohio. For many of you, you will recognize it at home to the HUGE (well it seemed so at the time) GM plant in Moraine. During our early adult years we actually lived in that community. My older children went to school there. My neighbors worked there. But even further back than that my dad built the brake systems which went to that plant. My “uncle Bill” (Dad’s best friend) worked over 20 years there. You can’t grow up in that sort of community without having an interest in the cars that these plants make and the community that those efforts support. Since those days that plant has closed and others have opened but we still have the founding interest in vehicles which began way back then.
Entertainment for the whole family
I remember the first time we took the girls to the Houston Auto Show. They enjoyed the Kids Zone (not available this year) as well as the fun characters they met. There were cars and trucks and SUVs for them to get in and out of. They would tell us which ones they wanted Mommy and Daddy to drive. It’s a good thing the Houston Auto Show has grown with them. Sure they thought it “fun” that their beloved Dora the Explorer was at the car show but they were not able to let me take a picture of them with her. No way were these up and coming tween girls going to do that. But play the PS 3 Gran Turisimo? Listen to some cool music? Eat some of that yummy smelling food? They are all up for that!
New and improved safety features
As a parent nothing is more important to me than the safety features of the automobiles my children are riding in. Now that they are older, that may be a little harder for me to find out. After all they won’t always be riding in my car but first with friends’ parents or coaches and then with their friends as they get older. Attending the auto show helps me learn what is new and improved in safety features. Manufacturers like Toyota even has a great display that told me about their Safety Sense System and which cars have which features. Knowing this information makes it so much easier to let them get into another car. Not EASY EASY, I still worry, but a little easier. I know having the features and using them are two different things.
As our family grows and changes so does our vehicle needs. I remember one Houston Auto Show we attended was our very first introduction to hybrid cars. We became fascinated by them, especially the upwards (at that time) of 40 mpg. As much driving as you do in the Houston area gas mileage is a big concern. Some said hybrid would never work. That it was a fad. I remember hearing that at the auto show that year. Now we OWN one! But as good as our hybrid is you know the saying “We’ve come a long way baby!” The same could be said not only for hybrids but for the automotive industry in general. Attending the auto show gives me the chance to learn all those fun facts and details not only able where our autos came from, what they offer my family now, but where they are going too.
This year’s stand out consumer knowledge on the hybrid front? The Chrysler Pacifica with 80+ miles the gallon. A MINIVAN! With that kind of gas mileage. And this was not your standard same old same old minivan. You’ll have to see it yourself to really experience it.
Contribution to the community
The auto show brings jobs and growth to the community. I met some of the team members behind keeping the cars looking good and those people are working hard every day. People travel here and stay in hotels. There’s extra workers hired on to help with the event. But in addition to all of that the HADA (Houston Automobile Dealers Association) with the Houston Auto Show donated $125,000 to the Texas War Memorial.
Anyone can write a check. But not just anyone has a Military Appreciation Ceremony which honors those who have served, who have served, the families of service members as well as those lost to service. It was a lovely and touching tribute as well as generous donation. Plan to see the official unveiling in Austin (fingers crossed) Sept. 11, 2017. This memorial will honor those who have served in what has become known as the “war on terror.”
You know all those cars you see and love and wish you could get behind the wheel of even for just a few minutes? Yeah- that! I walked up to the Mazda drive center and I asked, “Which ones do you have?” She said “All of them, even two of the cool new retractable fast back on the Mazda Miata.” Not only do you get to test drive (or be a passenger) but you may also walk away with fun swag like gift cards, t-shirts or shopping bags. I really needed shopping bags for the grocery store so it’s a WIN WIN for me! I enjoyed each of my test drives!
These are a MUST! In enjoyed two from the Dodge RAM line and learned so much about what these vehicles are capable of both on the road and off. The Dodge RAM 2500 was able to handle pulling a 5000 lb wall up from the ground and you didn’t notice it in sound or performance.
Camp Jeep, what can I say. I tried four different JEEPS as we discovered their on road and off road capability, not to mention safety. It was amazing and the drivers of the course are so knowledgeable – and willing to share that knowledge with you as you ask questions and enjoy the adventure!
